The maths

Commission = orders × order value × rate × 1.2 (VAT)
Saving = commission × share moved to direct
Kept = saving − ad spend

Worked example

A takeaway does 600 app orders a month at £24, which is £14,400 of sales. At 30% plus VAT across the apps, that is £5,184 a month in commission, over £62,000 a year. Moving a quarter of those orders to its own ordering page saves £1,296 a month. Spending £500 on local Meta ads to make that happen leaves £796 a month, around £9,500 a year, and the customer details stay with the takeaway rather than the app.

What the rates are based on

Uber Eats publishes its UK rates on its merchant pricing page: 30% for Uber delivery, 13% self-delivery and 13% pickup, excluding VAT (checked 30 September 2026). Just Eat and Deliveroo set rates by contract, so the defaults here are placeholders at the same 30% and you should replace them with your own.

FAQ

Delivery app commission calculator: questions answered.

How much commission does Uber Eats charge UK restaurants?

Uber Eats publishes its UK rates: 30% on orders it delivers (33% for Uber One members), 13% if you deliver yourself and 13% on collection orders, all plus VAT. The calculator uses 30% as the default.

How much does Just Eat charge?

Just Eat does not publish a full UK rate card. Industry guides put it around 14% plus VAT for restaurants that deliver themselves and around 30% plus VAT with Just Eat delivery. Enter the rate from your own contract.

How much does Deliveroo charge?

Deliveroo agrees rates through account managers and does not publish them. Guides quote 25 to 35% with Deliveroo delivery and around 14% for self-delivery. Enter your contracted rate.

Why add VAT to the commission?

Because the apps charge VAT on their fee. A 30% commission is 36% of the order value once VAT is added. If you are VAT registered you can reclaim it, so untick the box to see the net cost.

What counts as a direct order?

An order placed through your own website, app or phone line, where you keep the customer's details and pay no commission. A card fee and your own delivery cost still apply, so the saving is not the full commission.

How do ads move orders to direct?

Meta and Google campaigns targeted at your delivery area, pointing to your own ordering page, with an offer the apps can't match (a free side or 10% off). We run these for restaurant clients. The planner shows what you can afford to spend.

Should I leave the apps completely?

Usually not. The apps bring new customers you would never reach. The aim is to move repeat customers to direct, where the margin is, and keep the apps for discovery.
